What is the Asylum Seekers Centre?
The Asylum Seekers Centre of NSW (ASC) is an independant, not-for-profit, non-government organisation that provides practical front-line support and a welcoming environment for community based asylum seekers in NSW. ASC strives to build community support and pursue social justice outcomes for asylum seekers.
What role did the SCF play?
In December this 2010, the Sydney Community Foundation was proud to give a grant to the ASC to continue their work by being able to extend the employment of an outreach worker. The casework team comprehensively assesses the needs of individual asylum seekers and their families, and provides case management and casework support and advocacy to access relevant services.
How were the funds sourced?
The grant was made possible by funding through the Jack Dunlop subfund of the SCF.
The result
Caseworkers aim to assist asylum seekers to attain greater stability and greater participation in the broader community. The additional casework hours (10 hrs per week) that the SCF grant has funded will increase the program’s capacity to address the complex needs of asylum seekers.
