Breaking the poverty cycle in Sydney

Across Sydney struggling locals are accessing education and employment with the help of Sydney Community Foundation.

Through generous donations, Sydney Community Foundation has directed almost $5 million to local grassroots charities.

Our changemakers see what their communities need and find innovative ways to return dignity, empathy and hope to people who need it most.

Because, when children, teenagers, adults, parents feel safe, they go back to school, get a job and look after their family. Together, we’re building stronger, safer communities.

For over a decade, with your help, we’ve given families hope, and the chance to break the poverty cycle.

Educate & empower

One of the major barriers to safer communities is self worth. Believing we are worthy of belonging. We work one-by-one, focusing on postcodes of greatest need and tailoring each project to the unique needs of each community.

Our secret? Local champions and multi-year grants. The flexibility and independence to innovate. Every donation creates a new opportunity for a family, a person who wants to believe that they can.

By supporting Sydney Community Foundation you are the solution. Together, we’ve attracted $3 million to support small grants that bring education and employment, safety and independence to Sydneysiders in need.

Meet Janette

Janette is a wife, a mother, and now sewing machinist from Syria. Arriving to Australia with three teenagers she did not know anyone or have opportunity to work.

Thanks to our Women’s Fund supporters at Sydney Community Foundation, Janette accessed a sewing class and mentorship program with Australian design house Ginger & Smart and now works part time at The Social Outfit.

“There is no limit in the life to learn."

Janette now feels safe and optimistic about the future, for herself and her children. That’s the power of opportunity.
