Around 10 people a day present at Newtown Neighbourhood Centre who are at risk of homelessness or sleeping rough.
Distressed by the plight of their fellow Sydneysiders in need, the wider community often feel powerless to assist or direct them to appropriate services.
Harnessing this community concern, Newtown Neighbourhood Centre is taking action, offering a structured way for people to have deeper engagement on this issue, and take practical action that will directly assist.
Engaging the local community, the Newtopian Dream Team will provide opportunities for residents to collaboratively support people at risk of homelessness.
Run by Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, this project will involve recruiting, selecting, training and supporting a core group of community members. Receiving in depth training, we would aim to include a diverse group including those who have experienced homelessness themselves.
The community homelessness network will be equipped to provide frontline face to face information and support for people at risk of homelessness. Such assistance might involve assisting with completing housing applications or other housing related documentation, and help with identifying local low cost accommodation options or other relevant local service referrals.
