Founded in 1982, SHINE for Kids has provided critical support to children and young people with a parent or relative in prison for over 30 years.
The invisible victims of crime, children experience significant psychological and emotional trauma as a result of their parents imprisonment.
Academic engagement and personal development also suffer, deepening the cycle of disadvantage and laying the path for children to follow in their parent’s footsteps.
SHINE for Kids protects children by keeping families together, reducing the likelihood of transitioning into child protection and justice systems. Providing comprehensive support and free, supervised transport, children can visit their parent regularly in a safe, welcoming environment.
Program activities include Child-Parent Activity Days and Prison-in-Visits and are supported through the provision of free, supervised transport for those children who would otherwise be unable to visit their parent.
Child and Family Centres located close to correctional facilities also offer childcare and carer/guardian support. Maintaining those precious relationships, creates a better for future for both child and parent.
SHINE for kids will support 19 additional children from Greater Sydney and provide them with the self-respect, emotional resilience, and maturity to successfully navigate this extremely difficult period in their lives and determine their own future.
