Funding programs that support children with learning disabilities
Why I started a sub-fund with Sydney Community Foundation
My husband and son were tragically killed in a light plane accident. Whilst nothing can bring my family back, I wanted to have something philanthropic as a legacy for them. My husband was very supportive in helping me set up the Foundation, and I knew he would be supportive of me setting up the sub-fund.
What we do?
Our son was almost 5 years old at the time of the accident, and had a learning disability. My husband was a university lecturer and passionate about education. Whilst we were fortunate enough to be able to pay for programs to help our boy learn in the appropriate manner for him, there are many families that are not in this situation. Hence why I have set up the Neil Cocks & Heather Kent sub-fund – with a focus on helping children with learning disabilities.
Our achievements
Our sub-fund has given to such projects as “I Am Jack”, and “Midnight Basketball”.
What’s Next
We continue to grow the sub-fund year by year, and whilst our goal is always to keep the sub-fund in perpetuity passed from my generation to the next, we look forward to continuing to give to projects that help fund families and programs supporting learning disabilities.
